I love listening to music, I love singing along to it, talking about it (especially late night wine infused conversations with the blokey) I love reading about it, going to gigs and watching it, dancing to it, laughing at it and best of all... reminiscing with it. Its amazing how just hearing a song or a piece of music can take you back to a moment or a special memory or a certain time in your life... And today this happened to me. I was washing up and listening to the radio when suddenly I was taken from behind my kitchen sink and back to being 9 years old again, a time when the things I cared most about where playing out after school with my friends, roller skating everywhere and owning a pair of British Knights or LA Gear trainers. And the song that made me remember this time was Chad Jackson's Hear the drummer (get wicked)...

As soon as it had finished I wanted to hear it again so I got straight onto YouTube so I could watch the video...I sang along and even danced around (its ok,I was home alone) I text the blokey to share my excitement with him, he text back some lyrics from it, he knew exactly where I was coming from...this then got me thinking about other songs and albums that remind me of certain times in my life...
Ahhhhhh... the first record I ever owned...Musical Youth. I played this record over and over until my dad threatened to make it into a vase if I didn't give it a rest!
Shakin Stevens 1985 Christmas number one. My best friend got it me for my 6th Birthday (my birthday is four days before Christmas, hence the christmassy birthday present) I remember it being at number one for ages, I think I still have it somewhere, it may be at my moms house. The best thing about it though...I still have the Best Friend and she still is :)
The fabulous trio...Bananarama, this reminds me of having sleep overs on the weekend at my friend Claire's house and miming along...we knew every single word and dance routine. Siobhan Fahey (on the left) was my favorite of the three, I still love that hairstyle even now.
My first girl-crush...Miss Minogue...I will always be a rock chick at heart but I adored her and I still do. I had all her records, my bedroom was covered with her posters, I wanted to look and dress like her so I used to buy Kylie inspired waistcoats!!! I even had the dodgy perm! I finally got to see her live in 2005 (minus the dodgy perm and waistcoat) on her Showgirl tour and she was amazing. She opened with 'better the devil you know' and it was a childhood dream come true for me. She really is one fabulous lady.
Bruce Springsteen Born in the USA, listening to this reminds me of a time before my folks had separated and we all still lived together. My dad always had a record playing, this was one of them that he played a lot. I get my taste in music (which is a very broad range) from my dad and the records he played...everything from Springsteen to Neil Young to Ian Dury and the blockheads.
Finally, the first cd I owned, Blur's Parklife album. It was 1994 and I was 14, I was late getting into cd's as we couldn't afford a cd player. I played it over and over, Blur were huge at the time and I loved them, there lead singer Damon Albarn was my new crush. A year later I would get to see them live on the 'Great Escape' tour, I went with two friends from school, my dad dropped us off and my friends dad picked us up after the gig, I slept over at my friends house and we stayed up until the early hours eating Heinz Baked Bean pizza (you can't get them now) and Sara Lee gateaux!
I really could go on forever with this post, but I wouldn't know where to stop! I hope you enjoyed my trip down 'my musical memory lane'.
One good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain. Bob Marley
If music be the food of love, play on. William Shakespeare
Thank you for the music, the songs I'm singing
Thanks for all the joy they're bringing
Who can live without it, I ask in all honesty
What would life be?
Without a song or a dance what are we?
So I say thank you for the music
For giving it to me
-ABBA
Happy Weekend ;)
